List of Best Forts in Goa That You Must Visit Once

Goa is an excellent place for relaxing among the beauty of nature, one of the most popular tourist attractions in India, and one of the most popular Indian states in the world. While Goa is linked to its beaches more closely, the countryside is also diverse with mountains, waterfalls, and more. In Goa, you will also be able to find splendid temples and churches worth visiting because they were built centuries ago. The presence of attractive forts is another facet of Goa worth exploring. These forts have been built, mostly by the Mughals and the Portuguese. 

It's very fitting to say that Goa has something for everybody, a heaven for the party lovers, adventure-minded people, and history explorers. A trip to the forts of Goa is often considered the complete package to make a perfect holiday and is a unique and different way of judging this destination. Goa has attracted a large world population to visit and experience the same with the beaches and the calm atmosphere.  

1. Aguada Fort

Aguada Fort in Goa was built in the year 1612 and has been well preserved and attracts tourists every year. The highlight of this destination is the lighthouse overlooking the Arabian Sea. Here sunset fascinates the heart of everyone. This fort has a freshwater source from which its name comes. Fort Aguada is one of Goa's most popular tourist areas with a view to the vast area of' seemed to be endless' blue waters. The traffic is high throughout the year. It is excellent for sightseeing and also testifies to the glory of the Portuguese empire.

2. Anjediva Fort

On the borders of Goa and Karnataka, there is another excellent fort at the Goa Travel Hub, Anjediva Fort. It was constructed in 1505 AD by the Portuguese. This fort is called Anjadiva and Anjediva as well. The island of Anjediva Fort extends over a surface of 1.5 square km. The fort is almost in ruins, but is currently a base for the Indian Navy; whereas most of the fort is still in ruins, part of it is still renovated and used by marine operators and the fort is just 1.5 square kilometers away and the fort is supposedly uninhabited, the naval base is currently part of it. The fort has plenty of maintenance and is also confronted with bad weather due to the proximity to the sea.

3. Cabo De Rama Fort

Cabo de Rama is a stunning Fort in the city of Goa with a rich historical legacy within its brilliant atmosphere. This fort is said to have derived its name from the Ramayana and extends across a surface of 1.80000 square meters. Lord Rama and his wife are believed to have remained here in exile for fourteen years. This beach is considered one of the quietest places in Goa by local residents. This is the best place for those who wish to escape stress because this place provides tranquility and calmness. A fine view of the Arab Sea and the nearby beach of Cabo de Rama can be obtained from the fort. You can reach this place by either hire a car, a taxi or even a bus from Margao or Canacona, which drops you straight from the fort.

4. Chapora Fort

Chapora Fort in Northern Goa is another popular destination for the skiers, a favorite night haunting thrill-likers to chill out. You have to go to this fort and experience a lifetime picture for the best views of the sunset. The steep slopes on all sides of this fort offer a great natural surplus to the sea. The fort overlooks and therefore has its name on the river Chapora. However, this fort, i.e.' Dil Chahta Hai' fort, has a more interesting name. The name literally means "the desire of the heart," and it was because a Bollywood film with this title (Dil Chahta Hai) was shot here in 2001. As the film became a blockbuster, a hit that hit the young generation with a chord, people began just to identify the fort with the film's name.

5. Corjuem Fort

The Corjuem Fort in Goa was built in 1705, with magnificent views of the river and the luxuriant green surrounding the Fort. This fort is famous due to its special location and it is known for being a military fort to defend the Portuguese people. This fort, which is one of the two leading inner forts, attracts many people even in the 21st century. The fort is lush green, and you can see lovely towns and islands in the vicinity. The fort is made of laterite rocks. Corjuem has a cable suspension bridge which is an important attraction since it is Goa's only suspension bridge.

6. Mormugao Fort

The location of Mormugao Fort makes it a destination for tourists in Goa city. This fort is located at the tip of the mouth of the Zuari River and is on the list of places to go to in southern Goa. The fort extends over a total area of 6 miles and was built in 1624. This old haemot, which still remains well preserved and stands today as one of Goa's leading coastal forts. For Portuguese ships, Mormugao was an important port. The fortress is said to be built to guard the mouth of the harbor just a few kilometers from the port of Mormugao. This fortress is one of Goa's most popular tourist attractions, and remains extremely popular until today, probably as a result of its conservation. Their tremendous bastion and bulwarks are untouched and continue to strengthen the area until today.

7. Nanuz Fort

Fort Nanuz was built by the ruler of Maratha in the 17th century; during the Goa revolt period, Fort Nanuz was known as the prime center. This place is beautiful because of its eternal environment, unique animals, and plants. This fort is a true symbol of the country's Indian chivalry. The fort today is mainly in the Ruins, and even when it is small in size, draws many visitors. Later, this fort was taken by the soldiers from the Panjim Casa. You can reach this place by renting a bike or a taxi, but as soon as you get to this place you have to go down a small hill. Valpoi, a small town situated near the fort, can always be visited.

8. Rachol Fort

Rachol is located in Margao's northeast corner. It lies near the seminary of Rachol and about 4 km from the town of Margao. This fort is well-known for fighting between the empire of Vijayanagar and the empires of Bijapur following the collapse of the dynasty of Kadamba in Goa. It was taken from the Sultan of Bijapur by the Hindu Vijayanagar in the fifteenth Century, then transferred in 1520 to the Portuguese in return for military assistance against the Muslims. Not an impressive destination as regards the quotient structure, but this place's scenic beauty is very enjoyable. The seminary Rachol is a famous monument, making this place famous among the lovers of traveling.

9. Reis Magos Fort

In 1551, the Fort of Reis Magos was built in order to protect the narrowest point on the mouth of the estuary, surrounded by sturdy laterite walls, stuffed with typically Portuguese towers. The old Viceroys and other dignitaries of the fort were recently accommodated from or on the way to Lisbon and proved to be a key element in the wars against the Hindu Marathas at the beginning of the eighteenth century, who never could. It's located on the south-eastern extremity of the table country in the province of Bardez, on the right bank of the Mandoví, about 2 km north-east of Fort Aguada. It is located at one of the most famous places of interest. 

10. Sinquerim Fort

Sinquerim Fort in Goa was built in 1612 and is situated 18 km away from Panaji. This fort is in essence the lowest extension of the fort of Aguada. This place is a must-see for the beauty of the Arabic Sea. This fort divides the beach of Sinquerim into two. The main aim of the fort was to protect Goa from the Dutch and the Marathas. For ships from Europe, this fort served as a reference point. Taj Holiday Village, well-known among the tourists, is situated on the right-hand side of the fort. The beach of Candolim and the river princess can be seen in the distance, stranded between the waves. 

11. Terekhol Fort

Fort Tiracol is a fort in Goa, India sometimes called Fort Terekhol. Fort Tiracol is situated on the northern tip of Goa, on the bank of the Tiracol River. A ferry from Querim falls to Fort Tiracol, 42 km north of Panaji. This name probably came from the Marathi ty - khol, which means ' steep bank of the river. The castle originally was built in the 17th century by the Raja of Sawantwadi, Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle. The selected site was on the north side of the river (right) and provided a magnificent panorama of the Arab Sea. The Sawantwadi Bhonsles kept a large fleet of indigenous vessels on the river Tiracol. The fort consisted of twelve weapons, a casket, and a chapel.

12. Tiracol Fort

Perhaps the most preserved and most visited fort of Goa is this ancient and imposing fort of Tiracol on the Tiracol River. This is partly because the fort was transformed into an exclusive hotel. However, even with the hotel's upgrades, the fortification still has a historical background and witnessed numerous gory fighting. The best part of this fort is that a ferry from Querim is available. The ferry gives its tranquility an eternal mark on the hearts. Built-in the 17th century by Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle.
